An outdoor after school dance and nature program for 1st – 6th graders
January 13th – March 11rd
(Make-up classes March 17th and 24th)
(no class during Feb vacation)
This program brings together nature appreciation, social and emotional support and dance. We’ll begin in 40 minutes for children to arrive and decompress after school; visiting with small farm animals, snacking and chatting with friends around the campfire, We’ll gather at 4 to check-in as a group and orient our bodies to the land. We’ll practice a robust and active warm-up to get our blood moving and our bodies bouncing to the rhythm of familiar tunes and then move into a series of exercises or “scores” focused on exploring the environment alone and together. Our dance class will end with time for sharing and reflecting around the campfire. Given that we will be dancing outside in all sorts of conditions (ice, deep snow, perhaps even mud!) this class will be deeply improvisational, experimental and lots of FUN. No dance experience is necessary to participate!
During the winter months, our site does not have any sheltered areas. Classes will be cancelled if it is raining, snowing (more then a flurry), or if temperatures are bellow 15 degrees. Makeup classes will be held on March 11th and March 17th. Please note: this program will not run the Thursday of February vacation.
3:20 – 4:00: Snack and free time (students may arrive any time between 3:20 – 4:00. Gill Elementary School students will be picked up at the Gill School by Anna at 3:10 and walked back to the site)
4:00 – 4:45: Structured movement time
4:45 – 5:00: closing by the fire
The cost of the program is a sliding scale of $80 – $240. Barter, payment plans and scholarships are available.
